Senior Secondary - Grades 10, 11, 12

Assessment:

Senior Secondary includes Grades 10, 11 and 12. Pathways to tertiary studies, further vocational training or employment is the primary goal of senior school education. Leadership and community participation as well as forging a pathway to post-school success sets the tone for Senior secondary. Senior students are recognised by unique senior school uniform identifiers and are taught through our Learning & Wellbeing program to model and exemplify emerging adult behaviours and responsibilities of active citizenship and contributors to society and the economy post-school.

Opportunities are provided in co-curricular program conducted in-school and in partnership with external providers including "High Resolves" and "Y Lead" to build esteem, encourage individual goal setting and apply skills learned to community based projects. Pathways and Outcomes complement each other to ensure success and progression to "next steps" beyond the final three years of schooling.

Information Technology options for grade 10-12 in 2016 :

In 2016 Shailer Park High School will be adopting a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy for The Senior School (grade 10-12.)  The 1:1 laptop program that has run through the school will no longer be an option for families. This is due to the devices we currently have are now out of warranty and no further Government funding has been provided to state schools to continue the program.

The school will allow students to use the internet and printers at school to meet educational requirements. Please note that students participating in Graphics, Certificate III in Engineering, IPT, ICT and ITN will complete their subjects in dedicated computer labs. It is an advantage to them however to be able to work on their assessments and tasks at home. Please see requirements for these subjects in the second table. Students in Grade 10- 12 will be invited to bring a notebook/ laptop that meets the minimum specifications below.

 Equity Issues
It is an expectation of schooling at Shailer Park High that all students bring a device to every lesson.  We will be offering an equity program for families that cannot, or choose not to purchase an individual device. This program is a daily loan laptop scheme.  Students will borrow a laptop from the IT office in the morning and return by 3pm. There are external agencies that may be able to assist families in this area.  Please contact the school for more information.

 Software Requirements

The following software is required for students to be successful in their subjects.

Microsoft Office

Microsoft Student Advantage allows students with a BYOD to install Microsoft Office on up to 5 of their BYODs for free. You need to sign into the Microsoft Student Advantage page  with your school email address and password. If you have difficulties completing this at home please see the online "How to install Office 365 Student Advantage Package". At http://education.qld.gov.au/learningplace/help/pc-mac-support.pdf

Adobe Suite

Students will be notified of how to do this if they are in the required classes.

Auto Desk

Students will be notified of how to do this if they are in the required classes.

Anti Virus

It is mandatory that all BYOD devices must have an anti virus installed.  Some examples include: Norton, Microsoft Security Essentials, and AVG. Families should take into account cost, and level of cover appropriate for their circumstance.  Microsoft Security Essentials is free and is appropriate for everyday use.

Security of BYOD Devices, Damage/Theft – Insurance
A crucial part of the BYOD program will be parents ensuring that the device is covered for accidental damage and theft. Parents should investigate if their Home and Contents insurance covers damage or theft of the device.

While Shailer Park SHS will continue to deal with inappropriate behaviour in line with existing policies, the school is not liable for any damage or replacement costs incurred while the device is at school or travelling to and from school. Any student who damages or steal another student’s laptop may be disciplined according to the schools Responsible Behaviour Plan.

Cost

All students contribute $50 to the IT levy as part of the Resource Hire Scheme.  This covers network connections, printers and technicians. For more information or to discuss the program further, please contact our Deputy Principal of Senior Schooling on 07 3451 2777.
