Shailer Park State High School is a vibrant learning community and a school of hope in Logan City. It offers a respected academic and vocational curriculum, with rich co-curricula opportunities. Background It opened in 1980 with 103 year 8 students and a staff of nine teachers. Facilities then consisted of a First Year Centre, Home Economics Block, Amenitites block and a Manual Arts Block. In the 1980s the school met the needs of a fast-growing residential community and new facilities such as a library and sporting ovals were built. The school enrolment had grown to well above 1500 until the mid 1990s when the population of the community stablisied. Demographics The school is part of the Logan Albert Beaudesert Education District. Students are drawn fromt he adjacent suburbs of Carbrook, Cornubia, Loganholmes, Shailer Park and Tanah Merah. The area is serviced by the Pacific Highway through Shailer Park, Tanah Merah and Loganholme. Shailer Park State High School competes with several local private schools for its clientele. Most parents work outside the school's catchment area with many employed in small business or involved in semi-skilled work. Logan Hyperdome is a significant focal point for business and social activities and is the predominant shopping centre in Logan City. The business area in the district is dominated by light industry. Student Population Currently over 800 students attend the school in years 8 to 12 including 40 student sin the Special Education Unit. 28 languages other then English are spoken at home. 26 students identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. The school community is characterised by a range of socio-economic indicators, high residential mobility and a large number of complex social issues.
